Movie Magic: Compare & Contrast Lesson Plan Day 1
Level: High Intermediate to Advanced IEP/ESL

Grammar Focus: Adjectives/Descriptors for Compare and Contrast Writing
Skill Focus: Listening and Writing
Socio-linguistic Focus: Cultural uses of color
Aim: Describe an action or a feeling through the use of color and color combinations.
Preparation: select 10-12 contemporary or classic movies that are age appropriate for your students. Show clips from each movie that are 3-5 minutes in length.
Pre-Task Warmer: Read instructions for task assignment and answer any questions that may arise:
Task: Each student will create in a journal or notebook or fill out a Movie Magic Project Worksheet that addresses the following instructions and questions about the movie clips shown in class (in lieu of a work sheet you can write this on the board and have the students write the questions and personal answers into a journal or notebook.):
1. While watching each movie clip, list the name of the movie and the dominant colors that you see onto your movie worksheet. When you list the colors, be extremely descriptive. Don’t just list the colors.
For example: The sky is blue, but is it a dark blue? Is it a blue that is as dark as a sapphire or is the blue sky reminiscent of a piece of turquoise?
2. What are the overall colors used to describe the scene?
3. Which characters wear what colors?
4. What color is the background?
5. What color are the props?
6. Of what do the colors remind you?
